Plus 20 tips to make the most out of your Pass!

Everyone’s favorite European train travel passes are on major discount! Now through 18 July, all Global and most One Country Eurail and Interrail Passes are 20% off! To help you make the most out of this pass, here are 20 tips to get you started!

  1. Be sure to choose between Interrail and Eurail correctly. Interrail Passes are for European citizens and residents, so anyone else visiting Europe should get a Eurail Pass.
  2. Plan your travel days carefully. During a 24-hour travel day, you can use as many trains as you want, so consider travelling long distances or seeing multiple locations during a travel day. But, to keep spirits high, don’t overdo it. When we travel, we typically stick to no more than eight hours a day on trains – and even then, it is still worth building in a two-hour break for lunch. Remember to enjoy the journey!
  3. Experienced travellers should avoid a string of single-night stays. Always allow for a minimum two nights at each stopover, if at all possible, to enjoy your travel to the max.
  4. Use the Rail Planner app to explore possible itineraries. You can save each possible journey as a designated trip on the app and adjust as you go.

  5. Remember that your pass IS your ticket for most trains. Certain trains (like Eurostar, night trains and most high-speed trains) do require a seat reservation, but most regional trains do not.
  6. Book seat reservations in advance when they are required, and even where they are only optional. For trains that require a seat reservation, book that as soon as you can because many of these trains do end up filling up quickly, especially during peak hours and / or on the most popular routes.
  7. Do know, though, that on the majority of trains in Europe, there are simply no seat reservations. With your pass you can just hop on and ride.
  8. Make the most out of your travel days by taking a night train. Night trains only count as one travel day, even if it arrives the next day.
  9. For the most freedom and flexibility, choose the continuous pass option. This allows travellers to travel at any time during the validity of the pass. No need to worry about which days you wish to use as a travel day.
  10. Give yourself enough time between trains to make transfers. Depending on the time of day and the station you are leaving from or arriving at, it can take a bit of time to make transfers smoothly. Take special particular care in cities where there are multiple mainline stations as you may need to transfer between different stations (as in Paris, Milan, Glasgow, London or Budapest). Besides the Tetris-like maneuvering between your scheduled trains, many stations are worth exploring thanks to their unique architecture and history. Give yourself time to enjoy them!
  11. Check out what facilities might be available on each train. If you get a chance to take lunch or dinner in a restaurant car, then go for it. It’s one of life’s rare pleasures.

  12. Grab a snack beforehand if you see that your upcoming journey features trains with no on-board bistro or restaurant car.
  13. Purchase a One Country Pass if you wish to travel extensively only in a single country with only limited travel in other countries. Otherwise, go for the Global Pass as it covers travels to 33 different countries.
  14. Activate your pass before boarding your first train, and if using a flexipass then remember to invoke a new travel day before boarding the first train of the day.
  15. On departure boards, search for stations and cities in the languages used in the country where you are currently located. So Vienna becomes Wieden in Polish or Wien in German.

  16. Be on the platform at least 3 minutes before departure time, perhaps even longer (5 to 10 minutes) at major stations. Train doors often close a few minutes before the train is scheduled to leave. Once the doors are closed, boarding is not permitted.
  17. Have your mobile pass handy and ensure that your mobile is sufficiently well charged to get you through the upcoming travel day. Ticket inspectors will pass through the train cars to check your pass. Just show them your mobile ticket for them to scan and you are all set!
  18. While many trains have free charging stations at each seat, some do not, so consider bringing a fully charged extra battery pack. Remember to also pack a converter if you are travelling between places like London and Paris, for example (though Eurostar generously offers charging portals for both UK and EU plugs).
  19. Take advantage of the pass discounts and benefits, such as savings on museums, entry into amusem*nt parks, like Disneyland Paris, and 50% discounts on many excursions on Swiss lakes. Remember that with a flexipass, it is not normally necessary to activate a travel day to take advantage of such discounts.
  20. Buy your pass today and use it later. Purchase your Interrail or Eurail Pass to save big now and activate and use it anytime from 1 September until 11 months from the date of purchase. No need to use it right away. With a pass waiting to be used, you can be sure that you will make that dream European trip by train a reality.

Save big. Travel even bigger!

Now that you have these top Eurail and Interrail Pass tips in your back pocket, it’s time to put the pass itself there too! Take advantage of this major discount and purchase your pass, whether it be a Global or a One Country Pass or an Interrail or a Eurail Pass, by 18 July to save big.
