Healthcare: Everything you need to know about hospitals, doctors, and pharmacies (2024)

From finding an English-speaking specialists to locating an out-of-hours pharmacy, this article helps you navigate Luxembourg's healthcare system.

We have already covered health insurance - registering with CCSS/CNS, getting your EHIC (and what all of these daunting acronyms and initialisms mean), sorting out your medical refunds, insuring your family members, and whether and where to get supplementary insurance.

That's only the first part of medical process, though - unless you are fortunate enough that you never have to actually see a doctor. Unfortunately most of usdo have to see one at some point, and it's good to know beforehand how to arrange appointments and so on. So that's what we'll cover in this guide: finding a general practitioner (GP), emergency services, seeing a specialist, pharmacies, and Luxembourg's hospitals.

Finding a general practitioner

You shouldn't have to travel far to find a GP no matter where in Luxembourg you live. Google will of course be useful in finding a doctor, but is probably not the best place to look.

The most comprehensive list of doctors (including GPs as well as specialists) can be found through Luxembourg's medical board. Unfortunately their list is rather unwieldy and hard to search (you can always try CTRL+F and search for your town/village), and doesn't include information on e.g. the languages that the doctor speaks.

A better place to look - with the slight caveat that they may not haveall doctors listed - is Doctenaor DHN. These have the added advantages of, first, allowing you to search by language as well as location and specialisations, and in some cases you can book an appointment online through the website. DHN also offer quicker reimbursem*nts by participating doctors, and doctors' agendas can be viewed via the Gesondheets app.
al
Another option is to check through your embassy, who may be able to provide a list of doctors and health care professionals who speak English and/or another preferred language.

A final option is to check Editus.

Seeing a specialist

The standard way to schedule a visit with a specialist is to first visit your GP and have them refer you to see a specific specialist. You are however free to see any specialist without a referral, though they may deny you medical service if they objectively believe that there is no need for the intervention you are seeking. You can find a guide to your rights as a patient here.

You can find a list of specialists through Luxembourg's medical board or on Doctena (above).

Emergency services

The emergency number in Luxembourg is 112. You may call 112 if you need immediate assistance from police, medical, or fire services. However, they can also provide information regarding out of hours emergency care, pharmacies, veterinaries, GPs, and dentists.

We have a list of hospitals and pharmacies including the day's on-duty hospitals for accidents and emergencies. If in doubt or in need of urgent care, you should of course call 112.

Out of hours GP services

For non-urgent medical assistance outside of normal business hours, you can visit one of the three out of hours GP offices. They are open weekdays from 8pm to 7am, and weekends from 8pm on Fridays to 7am the following Monday. If you need to see a GP after midnight, you should call 112 first and they will advice you as to whether a home visit is possible or which of the three "maison médicales" to visit.

The three "maison médicales" are:

Luxembourg City
59 rue Michel Welter, L-2730

Esch-sur-Alzette
70 rue Emile Mayrisch, L-4240

Ettelbruck
110 avenue Lucien Salentiny, L-9080

Pharmacies

Prescriptions can be picked up at any pharmacy in the Grand Duchy, and you can find a full list of pharmacies searchable by location/postcode on pharmacie.lu. Do note that pharmacies are subject to varying opening hours - some will open at 8.30am, others at 9am, some will close for lunch, others will not... and so on. You should always double-check the opening hours (also listed on pharmacie.lu) before heading out.

You can also order your drugs online. You select your pharmacy, enter your details and upload your prescriptions. Click here for a list of participating pharmacies.

Out of hours pharmacies

Pharmacies rotate the responsibility of providing out of hours services (from 8pm to 8am the following day). You can find a list of today's out of hours pharmacies herethrough pharmacie.lu.

Luxembourg's Hospitals

Luxembourg has several hospitals located around the country. Click the name of each hospital to access a list of services offered. This list is not exhaustive in that it does not include various departments offered by the many hospitals, and is based on a list presented by Luxembourg's emergency services (SAMU).
